Preston House draws its name from local history.
“Preston” is the name of a town that was amalgamated with the city of Galt in 1973. It had originally formed on land belonging to the German Company Tract, along the Speed River, and been purchased earlier from the Six Nations Indians.
A settler named John Erb bought the 30 km2 of land 1805. He built a sawmill there in 1806 and a gristmill in 1807. The settlement became known as Cambridge Mills. By 1879 it featured many industries, including a foundry, carriage manufacturer, potteries and a furniture company. Cherry Flour Mills was founded that year – it would later become the Dover Flour Mills, a Preston company that still operates today.
Preston became the Town of Preston in 1900, and had a population of just under 11,000 by 1959.

In the building
Access to Preston House is controlled by a key fob security system and electronic entry control. We ask residents not to allow anyone into the building who is not there to visit them specifically. Our houses are also monitored by a network of high resolution video cameras in the common areas and the outside grounds.
In the suites
Access to all suites is controlled through a key fob security system.
In the rooms
Access to all bedrooms is controlled through an electronic keypad security system.
Do I need to have a roommate ready before move in? No! We place many single students with other students based on the university program in which they are enrolled and our best efforts towards matching for personality. You also have the option to share a suite with your group of friends.
Are suites co-ed? That depends on what you want and what you are comfortable with. You can choose whether you prefer to live in an all female, all male, or co-ed suite.
How soon should I submit my application? Please submit your application early, as we compile our wait list in order of applications received.
How much are utilities? Cable? Internet? All utilities like water, heat, air conditioning and internet are included in the monthly rental fees. Internet is wired into every bedroom. Hydro usage will be monitored and charged monthly on a per-tenant basis. There is an option to set up group billing through Preston House and Waterloo Hydro.
How do I access the building, my suite and my bedroom? Upon move-in, you will be given a personalized security key fob that will allow you to swipe open the front and rear access doors of the building. This same fob will provide access to all amenities and your suite. Access to your bedroom is controlled by a digital keypad lock.
How does guest sign in and parking work? Guests may temporarily park with a low fee at a designated space specified by the Property Manager.
Can I receive mail at Preston House? Yes. The mail room in each house is located in the lobby. You will receive your mailbox key when you move in.
Will I receive rent receipts for my monthly payments? Yes. Because we are a private student apartment building, you will receive rent receipts for all months that you stay with us. You may use these when filing your income tax returns.
Is there security in the building? Yes. Preston House is equipped with close to 200 high definition cameras. These includes the parking areas, all common areas and the exterior of the buildings. Front desk staff are also on-site daily and will be able to assist you or answer any questions.
What if I need something in my suite fixed? We have a maintenance technician to fix issues related to each unit. Just fill out a service request with the Property Manager and our maintenance staff will address the issue. You will be given 24 hours notice of any maintenance issues that require access to your suite.
Are the suites furnished? Yes. The living room comes with 2 couches, a table, and a large flat screen TV. The kitchen is equipped with an energy efficient refrigerator, extra freezer, stove top, microwave and dishwasher. The large island comes with 5 bar stools. The bedrooms come furnished with a double bed, 1 night stand, a study table and a chair.
What deposit do you need? Rez-One requires first and last months cheques, key deposit and Hydro deposit, upon signing the lease and the remaining cheques are to be post dated. In the future we will be going to a pre-authorized payment system for greater convenience.
