Bridgeport House draws its name from local history.
“Bridgeport” is the name of a town halfway between Kitchener and Waterloo.
In 1829 Jacob Shoemaker harnessed Laurel Creek for a gristmill and the settlement he established was successively called Shoemakers Mill, Glasgow Mills and Lancaster.
By 1871 the population had grown to 700 and the town was known as Bridgeport. It had become a manufacturing centre with a brick works, a lime kiln, a pottery factory and a shoe factory.
A sugar refinery refined sugar beets and the demand for labor resulted in the Berlin (the old name for Kitchener) and Bridgeport Electric Street Railway. At that time Bridgeport grew to be larger than Kitchener. Enterprises like the Riverside Park and Casino offered “unexcelled facilities for picnics and parties, bowling alleys and shooting gallery etc.”, 15 minutes away by the BESR. The railway lasted from 1902 to 1912 when the Grand Trunk Railway bypassed the town in favor of Kitchener.
Bridgeport became the bedroom satellite and Kitchener Waterloo boomed. It became The Village of Bridgeport with full governance powers in 1951. It was absorbed by Kitchener in 1973. Bridgeport still has parks and recreation space, and the Casino is now a restaurant.
